Elizabeth is a historic city in Union County in northeastern New Jersey. As of the 2010 census, the population was 124,969. It is the state's fourth largest city by population. In 2008, Elizabeth was named one of "America's 50 Greenest Cities," by Popular Science Magazine. Originally called "Elizabethtown" when it was founded in 1665, the town was so named for the wife of Vice Admiral Sir George Cateret, one of the two original Proprietors of New Jersey. Many mistakenly believe the city was named for Queen Elizabeth I. There are many events of historic significance that took place in Elizabeth, including being continually attacked by the British during the American Revolutionary War. Also, in 1895, the town was home to one of the first car companies, the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company, and the Electric Boat Company got its' start manufacturing submarines for the U.S. Navy in Elizabeth. The city is made up of several distinct neighborhoods. Elizabethport is the oldest neighborhood. North Elizabeth is mainly a working-class neighborhood, known to locals as the "North End." The North End has easy access to New York and Newark via the NJ Transit train station. Peterstown is the most ethnically diverse neighborhood in Elizabeth and heavily industrial. This area also contains the historic Union Square, home to meat markets, fish markets, and produce stands. There are 46 parks in Elizabeth; the largest is Warinanco Park, which offers winding trails, lush trees and flower gardens, an ice skating rink, fitness track, tennis courts, football, soccer and baseball fields. The boardwalk recreation area contains a fishing pier and a marina that has slips and dry-docking facilities for more than 60 privately owned pleasure and fishing boats.

Elizabeth Weather & Climate

Manhattan and the surrounding area have four seasons of changeable weather. Summers are often hot and muggy and last until September. Temperatures usually soar to near 100 degrees F. for a week to ten days in mid-July to mid-August. Another uncomfortable time to visit New York City is during January and February when temps are often in the 20s and the concrete canyons of the city can turn into wind tunnels. Otherwise, the rest of the year the weather is comfortable, with March usually being the rainiest month. May offers great weather - just warm enough for walking around but cool enough to remain comfortable. Autumn has more sunshine than spring, although both are clear and bright. New York City is magical at Christmas time and the changing leaves of fall makes it a beautiful time to visit the area.
