Passaic is a city located in upper northeastern New Jersey on the Passaic River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 69,781 residents. The name comes from the Lenape word meaning "valley." One of the state's oldest cities, Passaic was first settled in 1678 by Dutch traders and called Acquackanok Township. In the 19th century, industry came to the area and Passaic became a textile and metalworking center. Passaic has also been called the "Birthplace of Television," home to the experimental television station W2XCD, which began transmitting from DeForest Radio Corporation in 1931. It was the first television station to transmit to the home and the first to broadcast a feature film. The whole area is mostly rural and tranquil, with beautiful countryside to the north and towns filled with history, dining and shopping venues. Southwest Passaic, also known as Passaic Park, is a residential and institutional center of Orthodox Judaism. It's home to about 1,300 families, numerous yeshivas, schools, and kosher food and shopping venues. This area is also noted for its large Victorian and Tudor mansions and homes. The Passaic River offers scenic recreational opportunities. The river can be accessed through a number of parks in the county, most notably Stanley Park between Summit and Chatham. It can also be accessed via several parks in Passaic County. The Great Falls of the Passaic River is located at Paterson, New Jersey. The Little Falls River Gauge is located just south of the junction with the Pompton River.

Passaic Weather & Climate

Manhattan and the surrounding area have four seasons of changeable weather. Summers are often hot and muggy and last until September. Temperatures usually soar to near 100 degrees F. for a week to ten days in mid-July to mid-August. Another uncomfortable time to visit New York City is during January and February when temps are often in the 20s and the concrete canyons of the city can turn into wind tunnels. Otherwise, the rest of the year the weather is comfortable, with March usually being the rainiest month. May offers great weather - just warm enough for walking around but cool enough to remain comfortable. Autumn has more sunshine than spring, although both are clear and bright. New York City is magical at Christmas time and the changing leaves of fall makes it a beautiful time to visit the area.
