Hoboken is a borough in Sussex County in the northwest corner of New Jersey. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,147 residents. The most significant tourist attraction to the town is Lake Hopatcong, which is the largest lake in the state of New Jersey. The town and lake have a strong history, especially given its close proximity to New York City. The lake became a major resort area in the 1880s through the 1930s. It's still popular with tourists who come for the charming town and water recreational activities. Hopatcong is easily accessible via Interstate 80 and State Highways 10, 46 and 206. It's only 40 miles from New York City, which is why it originally became a summer getaway for the wealthy from the city. An amusement park called Bertrands Island, which was accessible via the lake, trolley or by car through Mount Arlington, was constructed on the lake, but closed in 1983. In later years, the building of Interstate 80, which is a major U.S. highway, led to the town of Hopatcong becoming a permanent residential community. The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum is located in a rustic 19th century building and offers a look at the history of New Jersey's largest lake. The museum has displays and memorabilia, historical artifacts, photographs and exhibits on the lake, the area and the working of the Morris Canal. The Museum is located on the grounds of Lake Hopatcong State Park, just 2 miles off Route I-80 at exit 28. Admission is free.

Hoboken Weather & Climate

Manhattan and the surrounding area have four seasons of changeable weather. Summers are often hot and muggy and last until September. Temperatures usually soar to near 100 degrees F. for a week to ten days in mid-July to mid-August. Another uncomfortable time to visit New York City is during January and February when temps are often in the 20s and the concrete canyons of the city can turn into wind tunnels. Otherwise, the rest of the year the weather is comfortable, with March usually being the rainiest month. May offers great weather - just warm enough for walking around but cool enough to remain comfortable. Autumn has more sunshine than spring, although both are clear and bright. New York City is magical at Christmas time and the changing leaves of fall makes it a beautiful time to visit the area.
