Jersey-City
is the state's second largest city, located on the west bank of the Hudson River across from New York City. With eleven miles of waterfront and significant rail connections, it is a commercial and industrial center, surpassed only by the city if Newark. Jersey City is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse cities in the nation. Like New York City, it has always been a landing pad for new immigrants to the United States. The different neighborhoods of Jersey City each have their own aesthetic and architectural style. Downtown Jersey City includes the Waterfront and other neighborhoods include Liberty State Park, Jersey City Heights (or "The Heights,") Western Slope, Journal Square, West Bergen/Lincoln Park, West Side, Bergen, Greenville, Lafayette and Marion. Recently, the city has undergone a renaissance with many formerly abandoned buildings being renovated and upgraded. The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in Jersey City, maintained by the National Park Service. Ellis Island is also inside Jersey City's borders but is managed jointly by the states of New York and New Jersey. The body of water that surrounds both islands is known as New York Harbor. Jersey City is also home to The Colgate Clock, promoted as the largest in the world. It faces Lower New York Bay and Lower Manhattan (and is clearly visible from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan.) The clock was erected in 1924 and is 50 feet in diameter with a minute hand that weighs 2,200 pounds.

Jersey City Weather & Climate

Manhattan and the surrounding area have four seasons of changeable weather. Summers are often hot and muggy and last until September. Temperatures usually soar to near 100 degrees F. for a week to ten days in mid-July to mid-August. Another uncomfortable time to visit New York City is during January and February when temps are often in the 20s and the concrete canyons of the city can turn into wind tunnels. Otherwise, the rest of the year the weather is comfortable, with March usually being the rainiest month. May offers great weather - just warm enough for walking around but cool enough to remain comfortable. Autumn has more sunshine than spring, although both are clear and bright. New York City is magical at Christmas time and the changing leaves of fall makes it a beautiful time to visit the area.
