Margate-City is located on Absecon Island off the coast of New Jersey, just south of Atlantic City. It has long been a Jersey Shore beach resort destination and is famous for being home to "Lucy, the Margate Elephant." Originally known as South Atlantic City, an extension of the railroad through the city and the building of a restaurant-hotel in 1881 in the shape of an elephant named "Lucy" began to shape the future of Margate. The 65-foot high wooden elephant, Lucy, stands guard on the beach looking out into the misty sea. The "Elephant" was constructed in 1881 by a Philadelphia contractor at a reported cost of $25,000 for James Vincent de Paul Lafferty, Jr., a prosperous Irish engineer and inventor. In his application for a patent for his strange pachyderm, Lafferty stated, My invention consists of a building in the form of an animal, the body of which is floored and divided into rooms ... the legs contain the stairs which lead to the body ..." Today, Lucy the Elephant is a National Historic Landmark and tours are available of the large wooden structure. Other attractions in the Margate area include the Absecon Island Lighthouse, the Children's Museum in Egg Harbor Township and the Brigantine Sea Life Museum and Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Atlantic City, "America's Favorite Playground," with all of its' exciting casinos, entertainment and world-famous Boardwalk, is just a short drive north of Margate. Recreational activities in the area include swimming and other beach activities, boating, sailing, fishing and golf.

Margate City Weather & Climate

Southeastern coastal New Jersey has a humid subtropical climate, with maritime influences, especially in summer. Summers are typically warm and humid with cooling ocean breezes, which makes this region much cooler than inland regions. Winters are cold, but not frigid. It's not uncommon for this area to receive rain in the winter when the rest of the state is receiving snow. Spring and autumn are unpredictable, but usually mild with low humidity. During winter and early spring, nor'easters are possible, but hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes are rare. Thunderstorms occur 25 to 30 times per year, most of which are in summer.
