The-Dunes is an area between Haven Beach and Beach Haven Terrace on Long Beach Township on the Jersey Shore. Originally, the area was virtually nothing except hills of sand dunes. Today, it is one of the small communities under control of Long Beach Township. It was officially founded by James and Elizabeth Brogdon. Lifeguards are on duty at The Dunes, as they are on all the township's beaches from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from June 21 through Labor Day. The Dunes is part of Long Beach Township, which is located on Long Beach Island, an 18-mile long barrier island located about five miles off the Atlantic coast of New Jersey. The island's population is about 20,000 year-round residents, but the population swells to well over 100,000 people during the summer months. The Dunes offers lots of recreation, including sport fishing, sailing, swimming, shelling, crabbing, surfing, jet skiing, parasailing, biking, hiking and birdwatching. The island also contains many attractions, such as the Barnegat Lighthouse, the second tallest lighthouse in New Jersey (located on the northern end of the island,) and the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (located on the southernmost end of the island.) The community of Beach Haven is the busiest area of Long Beach Island and offers many shops, art galleries, restaurants and nightclubs, and is also where you'll find the island's only amusement park and water slide. Haven Beach is a more quiet, residential community on the island.

The Dunes Weather & Climate

East-central New Jersey , along the coast, has a humid subtropical climate with maritime influences. Continental and oceanic influences battle for dominance in the weather patterns on a daily to weekly bases. The coastal zone generally has warmer temperatures than the interior regions in winter. Sea breezes play a major role in the climate, and offer a cooling effect on hot summer days. Coastal storms, often characterized as nor'easters, are most frequent between October and April. These storms bring strong winds and heavy rains. Rarely does a winter go by without at least one significant coastal storm. Tropical storms and hurricanes are also a special concern along the coast, although plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
