Loveladies is an exclusive beach community located on Long Beach Island, an 18-mile long barrier island off the coast of New Jersey. Situated about 4-6 miles out from the mainland, there are over twenty separate communities on Long Beach Island, although there are only about 20,000 year round residents. Beach Haven and Barnegat Light were both developed as beach resort towns, but the other areas remain relatively quiet and peaceful. Loveladies is the most recently developed area on the island - due to a storm in 1962 that destroyed most of what previously existed here. Most of the homes in the Loveladies area are privately owned and used only during the summer. There are no hotels or motels in this area of the island. The unusual name of this community dates back to the 1870s when it was named after an island in the bay owned by Thomas Lovelady, a hunter and sportsman. As part of Long Beach Island, Loveladies is a premier vacation spot in New Jersey. The island boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast, as well as hundreds of boutiques and fine restaurants and many recreational activities. National Geographic Traveler Magazine rated Long Beach Island in its' top five "Best Beaches in the USA Poll." An amusement park is located in Beach Haven (and is the only amusement area on the island,) and the picturesque Barnegat Lighthouse is located on the northern tip of the island. Loveladies is considered the cultural hub of Long Beach Island and is home to the Long Beach Island Arts and Science Foundation, open year round.

Loveladies Weather & Climate

East-central New Jersey , along the coast, has a humid subtropical climate with maritime influences. Continental and oceanic influences battle for dominance in the weather patterns on a daily to weekly bases. The coastal zone generally has warmer temperatures than the interior regions in winter. Sea breezes play a major role in the climate, and offer a cooling effect on hot summer days. Coastal storms, often characterized as nor'easters, are most frequent between October and April. These storms bring strong winds and heavy rains. Rarely does a winter go by without at least one significant coastal storm. Tropical storms and hurricanes are also a special concern along the coast, although plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
